MTSU fell to arch rival Troy 38-35 in the Sunbelt opener for both teams on saturday. Former Cougar Ben Cunningham put up a career day for the Blue Raiders. Cunningham crossed the 100-yard plateau for the first time in his career, finishing with 117 yards on 19 carries. His effort helped Middle Tennessee control the ground advantage, 167-to-132, and overall yardage battle, 582-to-479. click here for mtsu and troy game coverage

It would be a huge game even without the television exposure. It is one of the state's oldest and most competitive high school football rivalries. Obviously it makes for a great viewing audience as the game has been on television for the last 20 consecutive years. This week we highlight some of the glory days of the rivalry and identify the elements of what has made this game so special among the fans of both schools.

Cunningham still making the grade

Written by Webmaster
Hits: 138

Check out this section from a recent DNJ article concerning former Cougar Star and record holder Benjamin Cunningham.

"5 things we know about Raiders after scrimmage".

3. Ben Cunningham worth more than ever.

Cunningham, a rising junior, will be MTSU's No. 1 running back and an offensive leader this year, but will that take away from his other duties? Cunningham led the team in both special teams tackles and coaches' winning grades last season while ranking third in all-purpose yards as a runner, receiver and kick returner.

Already the best blocker among the running backs and expected to be a vocal leader, Cunningham may be asked to do it all next season. His leadership is apparent in spring practice. If coaches could clone Cunningham, they would do it.

Mitchell Martin (#22), Running Back, and Hunter Williamson (#1), Free Safety, sign scholarships to play with Cumberland University this fall.

Mitchell was an All-District selection and Offensive Co-MVP for the Cougars.  Hunter was 4th on the team in tackles and 1st in fumble recoveries as well as being a very vocal leader on the field.
